Recently we have been acquainting ourselves with life in the woodlands, and have gained an appreciation for the concept of “living off the land”. Our new found interest has been sparked by a couple of recent weekend hunting/outdoor ventures to the Central Georgia woodlands with one of our dearest friends/clients, Mr. Fred Horton. As the CEO of a substantial mining company (that also holds two sister companies), Fred utilizes his time in the great outdoors for refuge from the weekly grind, as a place to entertain business partners, and most importantly a place to enjoy quality time with his family away from the distractions of the concrete jungle. With family being such a focus in his life, he and his partners have named their camp “Family Solutions Conservation & Hunting”. The name was hatched from the idea of creating an alternative to the traditional “boys only” clubs in an effort to bring families closer through outdoor living and conservation.
With a life time of experience in the outdoors, Fred is one heck of a host, teacher, and outdoorsman. His current one square mile property lease is nestled in the heart of Central/West Georgia near the Alabama/Georgia state lines which makes for an incredibly scenic experience. If there is one word that sums up these weekend adventures, it would be “experience”. Everything about this area is an experience…from the drive through the winding country roads to the character that historic towns like Cuthbert, GA and Eufaula, AL provide; this is a region worth getting lost in on a Sunday afternoon drive! Beyond the nostalgia of the sights that the road trip offers, escaping the urban chaos to sit/stroll in the woods is an experience like no other. One is left to his/her own thoughts and the sensory stimulation that only a place so pure can offer.
From following deer tracks by foot to checking game cameras in the ATV to enjoying great company/fellowship around the camp fire with a cold or warm beverage are all “experiences” that we can live with…and may not be able to live without!
