Over the years, we have partnered with Red Bull on a variety of athlete and event initiatives. This partnership is rooted in our mutual appreciation for creating unique and inspiring content that tells a story. So, when the communications team at Red Bull Media House reached out with the opportunity to partner on the national finals of Red Bull Throwdown, we were on board without hesitation.
At Drawing Lines we’re often consulted to help produce action sports projects for brands, because of our original ties to these communities. The Throwdown project was a welcomed change, as we were not familiar with the niche scene of “tricking.” By definition the sport of “tricking” pushes human physical limits through the mix of martial arts, tumbling, and break dancing. After hours of Youtube research and conference calls with pioneers within the tricking scene, we were ready to tackle the highflying, energy filled production.
The event took place at the legendary Tabernacle in Atlanta, Ga. The Tabernacle is nestled in the heart of downtown Atlanta, adjacent to Centennial Olympic Park. The venue itself has an epic story, as it was one of the city’s largest Baptist churches and was declared one of the most significant real estate transactions in the city by the Atlanta Constitution. Over the years, the historic venue has hosted world-class music acts. Once we walked the venue and tested our lighting, we decided that having three camera angles would be ideal to capture not only the action, but also the crowd hype. High action events often lend themselves to high-speed camera capabilities to create dramatic slow motion shots.
After hours of acrobatic action and an infectious energy from the crowd, we knew that we had all of the ingredients to create an exciting web clip. Immediately following the event Josh took on the grueling duties of organizing and whittling down the edit. With no sleep, Josh was able to polish the final edit by 8am the next morning, just in time for the Red Bull communications team to get the story and clip out to all of the media (local and national). Unfortunately the media doesn’t sleep, so that means that we don’t sleep!
The weekend was jam packed with production on a zero day turn around, but the experience was tremendous and the feeling of accomplishment that comes along with producing a quality piece for an international leader in content marketing and the beverage category is like no other.
